What if you could sit down and have a conversation with Aristotle? Ask Nietzsche about the meaning of suffering? Get Simone de Beauvoir’s take on freedom and identity?
That’s exactly what APPAgpt makes possible — and we built it. https://appa.edu/appagpt/
Working alongside the American Philosophical Practitioners Association (APPA), we developed a custom AI-powered platform that lets users engage in real-time conversations with chatbots modeled after 12 of history’s most influential philosophers. It’s one of the most unique projects we’ve ever worked on, and we’re proud of how it turned out.
The Vision Behind APPAgpt
APPA president Lou Marinoff had a bold idea: use AI to make philosophy more accessible to everyday people. Not as a replacement for human philosophical counselors — but as a gateway. A way to show people that conversations about life, meaning, ethics, and purpose don’t have to be intimidating or academic.
Lou partnered with Dr. Nikolaos Mavridis, an AI and robotics researcher with a PhD from MIT and over 90 publications, to develop the concept and AI architecture. Our team at 914Digital was brought in to handle the full-stack web development — from the custom chat interface to the WordPress integration and everything in between.
What We Built: Features That Deliver
1. 12 Philosopher Chatbots, Each With a Unique Voice
This wasn’t a one-size-fits-all chatbot with different skins. Each of the 12 philosophers — including Aristotle, Nietzsche, Simone de Beauvoir, Laozi, Epictetus, Spinoza, Hobbes, Maimonides, Mill, Augustine, Averroes, and Ayn Rand — was carefully developed to reflect their actual philosophical positions, writing style, and approach to dialogue.
When you talk to Epictetus, you get Stoic wisdom about what’s within your control. When you talk to de Beauvoir, you get existentialist insights about freedom and authenticity. The bots don’t just spit out generic AI responses — they stay in character.
2. Custom Chat Interface Built on WordPress
We built a fully custom chat experience integrated directly into APPA’s existing WordPress site. Users select a philosopher from a visual card-based layout, agree to terms of use, and are dropped into a real-time conversation — all without leaving the site.
The interface is clean, intuitive, and mobile-responsive. No extra apps to download. No complicated setup. Just pick a philosopher and start talking.
3. Member Authentication & Access Control
APPAgpt is tied into APPA’s membership system. Users log in with their existing APPA credentials, giving the organization a way to offer the tool as a membership benefit while tracking engagement. This was built using custom WordPress authentication hooks integrated with WooCommerce memberships.
4. User Feedback & Rating System
After a conversation, users can rate their experience and leave feedback — giving APPA and the bot creators valuable data to continuously improve the philosophical accuracy and conversational quality of each bot. APPA practitioners actively help test and train the bots based on this feedback.
5. Responsive, Accessible Design
Whether you’re on a desktop at your desk or on your phone during a commute, APPAgpt delivers a seamless experience. We built the front end with Bootstrap and custom CSS, ensuring fast load times and a clean UI across all devices.
The Tech Stack
Here’s what powers APPAgpt under the hood:
- WordPress — CMS and membership integration
- Custom PHP & JavaScript — Chat interface, authentication, and real-time interaction logic
- AI/LLM Integration — Custom-configured language models for each philosopher persona
- WooCommerce — Membership access control and user management
- Bootstrap — Responsive front-end framework
- Custom REST API endpoints — Powering the chat functionality
Why This Project Matters
APPAgpt isn’t just a tech demo. It serves a real purpose that APPA articulates clearly on the platform:
First, it shows users that conversations with philosophy bots can be informative and genuinely interesting — opening a door to philosophical thinking that most people never knew existed.
Second, it reminds users that human philosophical counselors, like those certified by APPA, are far superior to AI when it comes to empathy, insight, and true understanding. The bots are a starting point — not a destination.
That balance between leveraging AI and respecting the irreplaceable value of human expertise is what makes this project special. It’s not trying to replace philosophers. It’s trying to create more people who want to talk to one.
